One of the main rules of compliance of all imported goods to India is the Bill of Entry Filing (BOE), which is provided by the Indian Customs Act, 1962. It is a statement to the customs authorities in regard to the description of goods, quantity, value, and origin of imported goods.
Accurate filing ensures:
The EDI system has made the process of filing easier. However, any mistake in filing is subject to inquiry, either time or heavy fines.
Goods classification—Determines the rates of duty; use the right HSN code.
Digital policy of filing: through ICEGATE portal; portal credentials are to be renewed periodically.
An importer had committed a wrong HSN for electronic goods. The practices resembled and imposed 100 percent of duty taxes. This would have been avoided through CHA to verify them.
BE filing applies to the following:
Importers: These are companies, individuals, and HUFs. This organization is known as Customs House Agents (CHA) to represent importers. The industries have specific importers, namely pharma, electronics, and limited goods.
Note: CHA and the importer must pay due to non-conformity.
Filing of documents that are mandatory:
To be audited under the Customs Act, confirm store documents of 5 years.
Hint: invoices and HSN codes are never supposed to be submitted without first ensuring that they were pre-validated.
The initial step would be to log in to the EDI Customs Portal. Log into the portal of ICEGATE and log in with the username importer/CHA. There are many types of entry bills. Select Short-landing / Regular / Warehouse according to the nature of imports and urgency.
Value of invoice, quantity, HSN code, port of arrival; make sure that the value of duties is imposed as per the Customs Tariff Act.
Uploading comes in a category.
The system generates a volume of the Bill of Entry; file customs duty by portal. Somebody: Checking the project prior to beginning the project. Physical goods can be searched by customs officers, and on goods estimation, goods are dispatched.
Normal imports: 24-48 hrs of delivery.
Special import (restrained products): 7-10 days.
Customs duty paid according to HS code, IGST/cess, and interest on late payment (late).
Late filing - 2 percent. of the month of duty (maximum 25 percent of duty)—do bear in mind that the filing must be done in the 24-48 hours of arrival; have a reminder system.
Pharma import late owing to the lack of an IEC license; BE was registered after 5 days at an interest of 10,000. The penalty might have been avoided by a timely checklist.
A bill of entry does not only need to be filed, but it also serves as a risk mitigation tool. Proper documentation, timely submission, and adherence to customs rules ensure smooth imports, avoidance of penalties, and standardized compliance credibility. At AtCorpCare, we combine regulatory knowledge, mathematical accuracy, and common sense to make the BE filing a painless and audit-ready process.
